From Graham Parkhurst, Kromboom Rotary.

Our club combined with RC Wynberg and Constantia at the Seawinds Community Centre in Military Road for the Rotary Family Health Day event . This is the same centre we were at last year and this year saw a threefold increase in numbers.

Congratulations must go to Doris from our club, who teamed up with Biffy Danckwearts from RC Wynberg and Geoff von Klemperer from RC Constantia to create a highly successful event.  Each day was met with a long queue in the morning before the doors even opened, with the highest demands being for eye testing and dental hygiene.  While the local clinics cater well for all the basic community needs, this does not include these two more specialised services, which proved extremely popular.  To build on this event for next year will certainly be a challenge,  and perhaps this experience will also open up an opportunity for a future Dental Clinic in the area.

A very big  “Thank You” must go to Spec Savers and to Emma Coulter the dental hygienist and her assistant, for their huge contribution.  Then of course there were the numerous NGOs providing various services, the volunteer nurses who were always frantically busy and our own cub members, including our President, and those from the other two clubs who put in many hours of hard work. The numbers below speak for themselves.

  • People registered or seen (no doubt some extras crept through) – 1871   (1/3 male)
  • Total interventions or services – 5 581
  • Readers dispensed – just over 300
  • Number of people who had their eyes tested – 959 (two machines in operation)
  • Number of people seen by the oral hygienist - 416 plus an incredibly high percentage having to be referred for further treatment (cavities etc.)
  • Number of people provided with First Aid knowledge – 758
  • Deworming – 262 (only had a nursing sister for 2 mornings)
  • Blood pressure – 584

Those who were there will have the satisfaction knowing that you helped make a real difference to so many people’s lives. We were thanked by so many people from the community and we all witnessed in our own way some happy event which has made this project so very worthwhile.
