DISTRICT 9350 PR ON FACEBOOK

So, what’s all the Fuss about Facebook…?

Facebook is an online internet resource which powerfully connects its members by allowing them to network and share ideas and information.  The concept, originally pioneered by academia using online text based ‘listservers’ has now taken the world by storm and websites such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn boast millions of members   The power in the concept – now aptly known as Social Networking - is that it easily facilitates ‘one-to-many’ communications and, at the same time, places vast information resources at the fingertips of users.

Social networking sites have taken over from email in popularity and the greatest growth in Facebook comes from people ages 35-49.  Interestingly, from December 2007 to 2008, Facebook had more growth in visitors aged 50-64 than from those under 18.  (http://www.nielsen-online.com).

So, what about the privacy question………?  Your privacy is up to you. You can tell fellow users as much about you as you would like them to know.  You can select your ‘friends’ (those who can see your profile) and you can determine how much detail they see.  As with any new skill, the important thing to remember while you are learning the ropes is to first become au fait with the environment.  When you sign up, choose a sensible, private password, set your privacy and security settings as high as seems appropriate for your level of experience, and then relax as you become more familiar with this amazing resource.

From the Rotary perspective, by joining our District Facebook Group you can find news, discussions, videos, online links and input from Rotarians across our District.  What better way to pick up ‘best practice’ ideas for your Club’s projects?  And why invent a wheel that may already be working perfectly well in another area; you can simply post a question to see what other Clubs in District have done.  By the way, our group is a ‘closed’ one which means that only invited users, or those approved by one of our two administrators, can view or participate in the Group.

Join Facebook, why don’t you ……?  You’ll find our District group at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=6444463054 or, from within Facebook, go to Groups, and search for Rotary International District 9350.

We look forward to seeing you online.
