LANDMINE VICTIMS ASSISTANCE PROJECT

THE REALITY

Girls and boys playing in a field
Thud!  Deathly silence
Another child injured

Women and men working, washing, going to work, returning home
Thud!  Deathly silence
Another mom or dad injured

The sad daily risks and reality for some.

Along the Namibian / Angola border military conflict has raged for more than 25 years.  Despite no current war the area is still not totally stable.  Almost daily yet another landmine victim is carried into the Rundu Hospital.  Injured or missing a limb, large brown eyes swollen from tears and still full of fear.  Another patient has arrived.  And, there are people who are willing to help. Here healing of body and soul can now begin.

Dr Yuri Yangazov and his team are kept busy assisting civilians caught by one of man's cruellest inventions - silent, deadly landmines left armed and unmapped in the bush.  Not only does Dr Yuri's team restore mobility to these victims but also dignity and self-esteem.

This dedicated group of people includes one of Dr Yuri's first patients who now manufacture prosthetic limbs to assist other casualties.  Patients include people of all ages.  Children, who may require as many as three prostheses as they grow, develop into confident young adults with the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to society.

This project grew from the necessity for care and the willingness to help others.  The project is now established and sustainable, but care and dedication require the support of funds for medicines, equipment and logistics to make a real difference to the many people who need our help with various prostheses.

Our fundraising effort is directed at raising further seed capital which when supported by international and further Rotary funding will provide the funds needed to extend this very special project.

Thanks to the support of the Youngsfield General Support Base, Rotary has arranged a formal dinner at the Castle of Good Hope on the 23 February 2007.  This is planned to be a fun filled evening, to be enjoyed by 100+ guests, who while wining and dining, will have earned the inner satisfaction that they have also assisted some deserving person far away.  Support from every ten guests should provide sufficient funding to get two more persons up and walking again.

The dinner arrangements are:
19H00 for 20H00, Friday, 23 February 2007,
Het Bakhuys, The Castle of Good Hope, Cape Town,
Dress – formal,
Cost – R500 per person,
A fun filled evening for a very worthy cause.

We do need your full support please. Please promote the dinner to your friends, colleagues. This will be a great evenings’ entertainment for your business associates staff and clients.

Please assist by attending the dinner, making a donation to the project or donating appropriate items for an auction after our main course on the evening. For every table of ten guests in attendance two more injured persons will walk again. A real difference in someone’s life!

Please reply soonest to assist and/or make your reservation.

Should you have any queries, and better wish to support the dinner, please contact us, as below.

Thank you for your support.
